Red, beautiful and razor sharp

In 2024 and 2025 TriJaXa will support the publication of a book about the prehistoric trade in red and grey flint found on the striking island of Heligoland.

Nowadays the red flint from Heligoland (actually it originates from the Düne, a little island or sand dune east of the island) is transformed into jewelry and is sold on the island or on Internet. Thousands of years ago our ancestors used the same material to make razor sharp axes (figure in the middle), daggers (right figure), knives and sickles. Besides the red ones also tools of high quality grey flint were made on the island. During prehistoric times these products were exported to regions in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands often hundreds of km from the source. The transport partly had to take place by sea and knowledge of navigation and suitable boats were indispensable for this.

Scientists from Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands  are currently working on the publication. TriJaXa will help them by providing scientific input, writing texts and taking care of the photography of objects.

The book will be published around December 2025.
